Hyannis, a village of Barnstable, is the geographical, commercial and transportation center of Cape Cod. Thronged with shops, boutiques, fine ethnic restaurants, homemade ice cream parlors and coffee bars, Hyannis is about as “urban” as the Cape gets. 

Ferries embark daily from docks near Main St. on revolving schedules to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. Within walking distance are several ocean side parks and beaches. These include Kalmus Park, Veteran's Park, JFK Memorial Park and Aselton Park.

Those seeking to escape clamor of their own lives should steer straight to the north side for Route 6A’s singular antique and craft shops, for the tiny village of Barnstable whose stately county courthouse oversees the little row of shops and whose side lanes meander to the marsh and Cape Cod Bay.

For another ocean adventure, take one of the daily whalewatching excursions departing from the Marina in Barnstable Harbor. Baleen, Humpback, Finback, Minke and Right whales all feed in the shallow waters of Cape Cod Bay.

Along Route 6A in Barnstable Village one can find many unique shops and eateries, adding to the ambiance of the town's gracious historical district. Spanning from Phinney's Lane to the edge of Cummaquid, the district is lined with quaint bed & breakfasts, inns, antique shops and restaurants.

Yarmouth’s Route 28 segment provides one of the Cape’s best array of places to stay and activities for families. Children in particular seem to love this haven of tee shirt vendors, ice cream stands, and miniature golf courses. A brief drive north of this merry scene delivers one to the bucolic zone of Yarmouthport, the land of sea captains’ homes become inns and bed and breakfasts.
